Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence

The Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence is one of the most important and prestigious traditions at UNC Charlotte. This award honors outstanding tenured teachers on our campus and provides an example of the University’s commitment to excellence in teaching.

History

The Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence was first presented in 1968 to recognize outstanding faculty members at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. It was established in response to a suggestion by the staff of the student literary magazine.

Vice Chancellors Bonnie E. Cone and W. Hugh McEniry endorsed the students’ proposal for the annual award and presented it to Chancellor Dean W. Colvard. Chancellor Colvard found financial support for the award through the generosity of Addison H. Reese and NCNB, a predecessor to NationsBank and Bank of America.

Until 1990, the award was often given to multiple recipients each year.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the award, faculty members must be:

  • A full-time, tenured member of the UNC Charlotte faculty
  • A member of the UNC Charlotte faculty for at least seven (7) years
  • Teaching at UNC Charlotte in the year that the award is given
  • Nominated within the year of the award
  • Not a former recipient of the award
  • Not a finalist for the award in the previous two years
